Skating into Sunshine: West Palm Beach’s First Outdoor Ice Rink Debuts This Winter

Ice skating in West Palm Beach, Florida?  Is that even possible?  Well, it could be…

This winter, West Palm Beach residents might soon have the chance to don ice skates and enjoy an outdoor skating rink downtown.

The Ben Hotel has proposed using the space next to Elizabetta’s Ristorante on Banyan Boulevard for a temporary ice rink that could accommodate 78 skaters, ensuring a fun and unique winter experience.

The West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), which revitalizes neglected areas using taxpayer funds, owns the property and must approve the rink plans. The decision is expected in July or August.

As a local, I can personally tell you that the location of The Ben on the downtown waterfront is absolutely gorgeous anytime of year especially during the “Winter.”

This is a selfie of me and my husband, John, from the balcony of The Ben enjoying a amazing evening with cooler temperatures in the Sunshine State while most of America has snow…

Palm trees, water, sunshine, yachts… of course, we would love to see an ice rink thrown in the mix!

How can an outdoor ice rink exist in Florida’s warm climate?

The Ben, located at 251 N. Narcissus Ave. and operating since 2020, understands the local weather well. General Manager Bernardo Neto explained that if approved, the rink will operate from November 12 to March 9, 2025.

Neto mentioned that the rink would utilize external machinery to keep the ice frozen, powered electrically without the need for noisy generators. The Ben is coordinating with Florida Power & Light on the power needs and has proposed admission prices between $15 and $25, with possible discounts for locals.

The Ben plans to work with the city, which hosts numerous holiday events, including Sandi, a Christmas tree made of beach sand. Neto hopes to attract visitors who will skate, dine, and share their experiences on social media, boosting interest in both the rink and the city of West Palm Beach.
