When prepping one of my featured properties for showings, I encountered a common yet frustrating problem — walls discolored by cigarette smoke.
That yellow haze is not just ugly; it suggests poor air quality, turning off prospective buyers before they even step in.
With this being such a challenging obstacle to overcome, I decided to roll up my sleeves and handle it myself.
I mixed a simple solution of bleach and warm water, grabbed a mop, and started working section by section. It’s important to wear a mask, open the windows, and/or use some type of air filter when working with bleach.
It didn’t take long to see results — the walls literally started to brighten as the smoke residue lifted away.
What impressed me even more was how the smell began to fade almost immediately.
Cigarette smoke has a way of sinking into every surface, and while paint can cover color, it can’t cover odor. The bleach neutralized that lingering scent, leaving behind a crisp, clean freshness that even surprised me.
Once the walls were done, I let the home air out with all the windows open and fans circulating for a few hours.
By the next day, the space felt completely different — brighter, fresher, and ready for staging.
It was a great reminder that sometimes the simplest tools — a mop, bleach, and a little elbow grease — can make a huge impact. A clean home not only looks better, but it feels better, which helps potential buyers envision themselves living there.
